Not By Bread Alone (2005)

From acclaimed Russian Director, Stanislav Govorukhin. Based on Vladimir Dudintsev's novel of the same name, Not By Bread Alone is set in the years just after the end of World War II. Stalinist Russia is shaping the country, and science, technology and patriotism to the mother state are subjects of extreme fervour. However even in this atmosphere of obsession, romance can still bloom, and prove as strong a reason for real sacrifice as anything a didactic nationalist spirit can hope for. Not By Bread Alone, is a wonderful romantic drama with an endearing ensemble of contrasting characters that will spike your imagination, while again offering a remarkable insight into a period of time often overshadowed by terror.
