The Mirror (1975)

A rarely seen, yet pivotal film in Tarkovsky’s career, is The Mirror. The narrative travels between conscious and subconscious, past and present, mixing flashbacks, historical footage and original poetry to illustrate the reminiscences of a dying man about his childhood during World War II, adolescence, and a painful divorce in his family. “The unique blending of imagery and sound design (The Mirror) that Tarkovsky achieves is simply mesmerising, and typical of the director's genius. What we have here is sheer poetry. How this giant of a filmmaker imbues such charged metaphorical significance to often-simple images is astounding. He has an uncanny ability to speak direct to the heart.” (Collective, British Broadcasting Coorporation).
