Ninth Company (2005)

No film making nation in the world, is able to reproduce the horrors and realism of war, as Russian film makers seem to be able to do. And, Ninth Company continues the tradition of classic Russian War movies with fine style, though the war depicted here is Afghanistan, 1988. Six freshmen meet at Krasnoyarsk, from where they are sent to a training camp near the Afghan border. After a few months of training the cadets end up in the Ninth Company, the most fearless and active brigade in Afghanistan. From there, the Ninth Company receives an order to take ridge 3234 and provide safe passage for the tank column. Ninth Company echoes a barrage of themes to illustrate the blood, dirt and death of a war that no one really needs or understands, much like the unwanted wars we see today.

Ninth Company was the No.1 film at the Russian Box Office in 2005.
