Based on Boris Akunin's novel of the same name, Counsellor
of the State, is set at the end of the 19th Century,
as the rule of the Russian Empire is crumbling. Starring
the finest ensemble of Russian actors today, the film
is a classic who-dun-it, involving heads of governments,
famous detectives and the cream of Russian society.
It is a stylish dissembler of truth and corrupt privilege
with all the beauty of the era celebrated as the backdrop
to this intriguing murder mystery. On board a ministerial
train, heading to Moscow, the Governor-general of
Siberia is found murdered, and on the murder weapon
are the initials BG, belonging to a terrorist organization
which keeps both capital cities (Moscow and St. Petersburg)
in fear. According to a filed escort's report, a state
counsellor, sworn to protect the governor-general,
is to blame for the crime. But when a famous detective
takes on the investigation, he uncovers a plot that
leads up the ministerial channel of the Empire.
