introduction

Russian Resurrection is a non-profit organisation registered with the Department of Fair Trading as an Incorporated Association. The Organisation was formed with the objective of conducting Russian Film Festivals in Australia, and expose the cinema going public to both old and new Russian Cinema.  An annual festival of this nature was deemed necessary to provide a selection of rare and unique films that people otherwise might not have had an opportunity to see.

Russian Resurrection has established ties with the Agency of Cinematography of the Russian Federation and the Cultural Fund (Russia) to assist with the organisation of such festivals in Australia and in the near future in New Zealand.

The Island (2006)
Остров
Genre: Drama
Director: Pavel Lunghin
Cast: Pyotr Mamonov, Viktor Sukhorukov, Dmitri Dyuzhev, Yuri Kuznetsov, Viktoriya Isakova
Duration: 110 minutes

Synopsis: This highly acclaimed, multi-award winning film takes a meditative look at redemption and forgiveness through the eyes of a self-exiled Russian priest, Father Anatoly, living on a cold windswept island in the stern landscape of the Russian North. In the tradition of the holy fool, Father Anatoly relishes his harsh existence and takes comfort in self-deprivation (he sleeps on a bed of coal). His wish to be left alone often causes him to behave in an inexplicable and deranged manner that leads to both frustration and inspiration in his fellow priests and visiting locals looking for miracles. The Island is a masterful and often comedic contemplation on the human need to believe in God and how to reconcile spirituality with the corruptibility of the world and our own nature. Beautifully enacted against the backdrop of snow-covered rocky islands, icy water, and lowering white skies.

Synopsis: Multi-Award winning and highly regarded internationally, this sweeping story of love and loss is set against the harsh landscape of the Second World War. Franz, a young German soldier, is billeted in a small Belorussian village with his unit. The language barrier helps to create an illusion of calm as the soldiers relax into the peaceful village lifestyle. Franz lives in the home of Polina and her mother, and the two form a tentative bond. However the village inevitably falls under the "burnt earth" strategy of the retreating German army, and all innocence is totally destroyed in the aftermath. Movie Poster Euphoria (2006)
Эйфория
Genre: Drama
Director: Ivan Vyrypaev
Cast: Polina Agureyeva, Mikhail Okunev, Maxim Ushakov
Duration: 73 minutes

Synopsis: This beautifully crafted multi-award winning drama revolves around the secret passion between two lost souls at the forgotten end of the world. The hauntingly desolate landscape of the Russian plains is reflected in the sparse dialogue of this mesmerising film, in which the characters play out a seemingly naive inability to take control of their lives. However it is from this minimalism that a deep well of passion of both innocent and destructive qualities emerge, creating that elusive feeling of Euphoria felt by the characters in this drama and the audience alike. Russian art house filmmaking at its best.

Агит бригада - 'Бей врага'
Genre: Tragic Comedy
Director: Vitali Melnikov
Cast: Viktor Sukhorukov, Kirill Pirogov, Natalia Tkachenko, Anna Danilova
Duration: 122 minutes

Synopsis: Debuting at the Moscow Film Festival this year, Beat the Enemy will have its world-wide premiere at the 2007 Russian Resurrection Film Festival in Australia. The film follows the journey of a hastily assembled propaganda unit composed of exiled artists and actors in the waning months of the Second World War. They are sent on a mission down a remote Siberian river to spread the triumphant word of Soviet military feats among isolated communities. Along their travels the self-styled propagandists' meet up with the banished Volga Germans and Orthodox sects who have found a sanctuary in the most inaccessible and far-flung places. As well, it openly depicts boats transporting Kalmyk and Baltic deportees to the Siberian netherworld, an appalling operation decreed by Stalin but never before presented this way on the big screen. It is a haunting and refreshing look at the murky history of soviet Russia in the final hours of WWII.

Genre: Drama
Director: Avdotya Smirnova
Cast: Anna Mikhalkova, Mikhail Grebenschikov, Dmitry Shevchenko, Anastasia Seglia,
Duration: 84 minutes

Synopsis: The award-winning Relations cuts straight to the heart of love in a modern day marriage, where it appears infidelity has become an omnipresent and unremarkable phenomenon-both for men and women, in both Russia as in the rest of the world. No reason is ever given for the affair between Nina, a middle-class advertising agent who lives in St. Petersburg and Ilia, a prosperous upper-class businessman from Moscow. On the surface we witness what appears to be a blasé cliché, too easily accepted as the norm. What we cannot escape in the end is that the reality always goes deeper for everyone involved, reminding us of human truths we shouldn't ignore.

War and Peace (1968)
Война и Мир
Oscar WinnerGenre: Drama
Director: Sergei Bondarchuk
Cast: Lyudmila Savelyera, Vyacheslav Tichonov, Gennadi Ivanov, Irina Gubanova
Duration: 505 minutes
Rating: G

Synopsis: Sergei Bondarchuk's epic 8+ hour marathon adaptation of Tolstoy's classic War & Peace surpasses all else on scales of grandeur, ambition, exacting details and expense. This multi-award winning masterpiece (including the 1969 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film) is rewardingly obsessive in its accurate depiction of Tolstoy's tale of five families set against the magnificently described background of Napoleon's Invasion of Russia in 1812. Bondarchuk's unsurpassed perfection as Director has created a super-spectacular that puts all modern computer generated effects-laden films to shame. It is breathtaking to witness the 40 minute re-enactment of the battle of Borodino, staged with 120,000 men and 800 horses, or the looting and burning of Moscow, or the fairy tale ballrooms and grandeurs of that city's pre-1812 elegance. Perhaps the greatest movie ever made of the greatest tale ever written, War and Peace is also the most expensive film ever made, clocking in at $US 560 million (in adjusted figures).

Awards:
  • 1969 Academy Awards - Best Foreign Language Film
  • 1969 Golden Globe - Best Foreign Language Film

Movie Poster Crime & Punishment (1969)
Преступление и Наказание
Genre: Drama
Director: Lev Kulidzhanov
Cast: Georgi Taratorkin, Innokenti Smoktunovsky
Duration: 221 minutes
Rating: PG

Synopsis: This stunning and emotionally charged adaptation of the classic novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, an impoverished St Petersburg student who formulates and executes a plan to kill a hated, unscrupulous pawnbroker for her money, thereby solving his financial problems and at the same time, he argues, ridding the world of evil. Shot beautifully in wide screen black-and-white, the film is completely true to the written work, and glows with a sense of realism. Of note is the performance of Innokenty Smoktunovsky, arguably one of Russia's most talented actors, whose memorising and emotionally driven portrayal of Raskolnikov presents as a forerunner to Jack Nicholson's famed role in The Shining, slipping in and out of insanity and absolutely captivating from start to finish.

Гамлет
Genre: Drama
Director: Grigori Kozintsev
Cast: Innokenti Smoktunovsky, Mikhail Nazvanoz, Elza Radzina, Anastasiya Vertinskaya, Yuri Tolubeyev
Duration: 140 minutes

Synopsis: Considered by many as the finest screen adaptation of Shakespeare's greatest work, Kozintsev's multi-award winning Hamlet is a haunting experience. The malevolence afoot in the state of Denmark is magnificently captured by the brooding black and white cinematography and the dark, dramatic score by renowned Russian composer Shostakovich. Leading film historian Richard Dyer wrote in the Boston Globe: "Paradoxically, the two most powerful films of Shakespeare's plays (Hamlet and King Lear) were made not in Great Britain but in the Soviet Union."

Movie Poster Brothers Karamazov (1969)
Братья Карамазовы
Genre:
Director: Kiril Lavrov
Cast: Mikhail Ulyanov, Lionella Pyryeva, Kiril Lavrov, Andrei Miagkov
Duration: 232 minutes
Rating: G

Synopsis: The Brothers Karamazov is Dostoyevsky's final novel, and is generally considered the culmination of his life's work. This magnificent adaptation, nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1970, centres around the murder of the evil Fyodor Karamazov and the effect his death has on his four sons, who all share varying degrees of complicity. Dmitri is a soldier, Ivan an intellectual, Alyosha is a religious mystic and Smerdyakov was a servant in Fyodor's house. The film brings to life the spiritual conflicts between the four brothers, focusing on the moral struggles between faith, doubt, reason and free will. It also brilliantly dramatizes Dostoyevsky's fascination for psychological analysis of the problems inherent in the co-existence between good and evil.

Awards:
  • 1970 Academy Awards - Best Foreign Language Film (nominated)
  • 1969 Moscow International Film Festival - Golden Prize (nominated)
