20 DAYS WITHOUT WAR

20 ДНЕЙ БЕЗ ВОЙНЫ

(1976)

GENRE: WAR/DRAMA
DURATION: 101mins
DIRECTOR: ALEXEI GERMAN
CAST: YURI NIKULIN, LUDMILLA GURCHENKO, ALEXEI PETRENKO, ANGELINA STEPANOVA

The premise behind the film is the siege of Stalingrad, a battle which eventually turned the course of the Second World War. Lopatin, an army lieutenant, has been granted 20 days’ leave from fighting and heads to Tashkent. He visits his ex-wife, signs divorce papers, meets up with friends and becomes involved with another woman. Before long, his leave is shortened and he must return to battle. True to Alexei German’s unique style, this is an non-traditional war film where neither the characters nor events are heroic.
