Veronika and Boris come together in Moscow shortly before World War II. They fall blissfully in love. Walking along the river, they watch cranes fly overhead, and promise to rendezvous before Boris leaves to fight in the Second World War. Boris misses the meeting and is off to the front lines, while Veronika waits patiently, sending letters faithfully.  Lonely and emotionally fragile, Veronika is unable to wait out the war… The film instantly became an international success winning the Palme d'Or at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival, The Cranes Are Flying has only just this year been spectacularly digitally remastered, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the sensation which the film evoked when it was new.  Not to be missed!
