Why don’t you just die? (2019)
Director: Kirill Sokolov
Cast: Vitaliy Khaev, Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Evgeniya Kregzhde
A roaring rampage of revenge with a jet black comic tone and a gleeful maze of twists and turns. Deception, revenge and a spectacularly dysfunctional family inhabit this new Russian rumination on crime and punishment. This deceptively simple story centres on Matvei, a nervous young guy who arrives at a Moscow apartment with a hammer in his hand and murder on his mind. Inside is Andrei, a police detective and the father of Matvei’s girlfriend, Olya. Things don’t quite turn out as planned and soon all blood-spurting hell breaks loose as family relationships are tested in a surprisingly cinema-smart, non-linear carnival of carnage. All set in the one apartment but with nods to Tarantino and spaghetti westerns, this furiously paced caper features a breakout cast, super-stylish visuals and a wicked sense of dark humour.
