Valeyi Todorovsky’s third film was inspired by Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella, “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District”. The Novel’s themes of the subordinate life of women, adultery and provincial life now unfold in a ‘Perestroika’ period Moscow suburb. Katya is a young and attractive, but initially mousy woman who types manuscripts for Irina, her husband’s mother Irina Dmitrievna, a successful and overbearing writer of romance novels. When Katya and her husband go to Irina’s summer house to work she meets Sergei. It is not long before Sergei and Katya start a passionate affair. After Sergei’s interest in her starts to fade strange and deadly things begin to occur. This award winning film shows how a wife finds her life turned upside down after a torrid affair.
