The premise behind the film is the siege of Stalingrad, a battle which eventually turned the course of the Second World War. Lopatin, an army lieutenant, has been granted twenty days' leave from fighting and heads to Tashkent. He visits his ex-wife, signs divorce papers, meets up with friends and becomes involved with another woman; before long his leave is shortened and he must return to battle. True to Alexei German's style, 20 Days is anti-traditionalist where neither the characters nor events are heroic. 20 Days captures your subconscious and stays with you for weeks after the finale.
